DIY Non-Toxic Hand Soap

I have always had an obsession with great smelling soaps and lotions [cue flashback to strolling the isles of Bath & Body Works as a young teenager stocking up on all things Sweet Pea and Cucumber Melon]. As an adult with a budget and a family to keep healthy I’m not shopping for those soaps at the same places. I’ve learned about many of the chemicals in artificial fragrances and their toxicity and am slowly working to rid them from my home entirely. I was purchasing expensive “organic” soaps which is better, but dang they are expensive! So I decided to explore making my own for much cheaper, and I know exactly what is going in them.

My mother-in-law started a wholesale account with Young Living shortly after my son was born, and since then I have become totally hooked on using essential oils. I love so many of the scents and there are a million ways to use them. I am totally not an expert, but I’m looking forward to learning more about them.

I searched Pinterest for Castile soap recipes, and in true Emily fashion read 2 billion articles on making your own hand soap using Castile soaps and essential oils before going with my own similar recipe/ratio.

Here’s how you can make it yourself if your home. *In the following paragraphs you will find affiliate links, if you click these links and buy these products, I will receive a small commission. This commission helps pay for the costs of running my blog, thank you for your support!

You’ll need Castile soap, my favorite is Dr. Bronner’s you can find it here, there are scented versions with essential oils already added that you could also try, but I prefer to add my own and it allows me to try different recipes with one big bottle. You’ll also need foaming soap dispensers, I recycled the ones I had from the soaps I had purchased in the past. But, you can find new foaming pump dispensers online, like these or these. You’ll also need Vitamin E oil, I buy this one, distilled water, and your favorite essential oil. I’ve been using Thieves, and Lavender, and I also like to use Orange (if you use a citrus oil you may want to use glass soap containers, like these).

Make your own hand soap using non-toxic ingredients that you can feel good about, and your wallet will feel even better.

Add 1/4 C of Castile soap, 2 Tablespoons of Vitamin E oil, and then 20 drops of your favorite essential oil (or combination) to the soap dispenser. Then, fill the rest of the container with water, leaving a little bit of room for the pump. Give it a nice shake, and you’re ready to clean!
